THE NIGHTEverything but sleep

From 30 october 2019 until 12 july 2020

For most people, the night is all about sleep. But what happens when we make do without sleep and stay awake through the night? Our world appears in a different light. Whether in the shimmering light of the moon and stars, the intense bright white of florescent lamps or the semi-darkness of a club – the night reveals spaces where you could never dream of sleeping.

This interdisciplinary exhibition casts a light for the first time from a variety of perspectives on our behaviour and communication at night. Visitors experience the many different facets of the ‘other half of the day’ – from the first star charts and the search for meaning in the night sky to strategies to

control our emotions in the night, to night-time as additional hours for work and life. The many exhibits from mythology, astronomy, art, pop culture and the history of technology show how we communicate in and with the night. In the exhibition, you can encounter the creatures of the night in the Bestiarium, spin the night-time Carousel of Thoughts and work through the night. You can immerse yourself in the history of nightlife, exchange ‘flirtation cards’ and leave your mark with your own personal graffiti. Ultimately, you find yourself back in the unsleeping world of modernity and contemporary life again: in the intermediate state of work, freedom, familiarity – and insecurity.
